It would be appropriate to refer a child for a speech and language evaluation when there are concerns in any of the following areas:

bullet ARTICULATION

Stuttering
Intelligibility for articulation disorders, verbal apraxia, or motor speech disorders like those related to cerebral palsy or brain injury
Intelligibility for children with physical impairments such as cleft lip and palate, velophrayngeal insufficiency, hearing loss, and/or craniofacial anomalies
 
bullet EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE

Age-appropriate sentence length or structure
Vocabulary or word finding skills
Asking questions
Peer interactions

RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE

Understanding of spoken language/auditory processing
Understanding of basic concepts, “wh” questions
Following multi-step directions and sequences
Reading non-verbal cues/body language
